I assure you something is lost in translation...it's even uglier in person. Has the same ground clearance as a Honda Accord Crossover. Jeep has lost its way

It is pretty ugly, but it does come with a pretty nice off road package depending on what boxes you check on the order form.

When was the last time that the Cherokee actually was an SUV?

I saw one. I liked it.

It'll appeal to lost of suburbanites with small families who want a small crossover with the Jeep heritage to go with it. The 3.2 V6 Pentastar is a nice engine coupled to a 9 speed auto. I think it's a compelling package simply based on that alone.

The front end has grown on me. It's funky-cool in a Nissan Juke kinda way.
The rear end? Jury's still out on that one...

You do realize that, by typical SUV 'standards', the Cherokee hasn't been an 'actual' SUV since the [SJ] was discontinued in 1983 in favor of the beloved [XJ] in 1984.
That means this is just as much as an SUV as the [XJ] was.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:23 |
|
Also by SUV 'standards', the Grand Cherokee was never a 'true' SUV, because it's not body-on-frame.

See, I disagree. There's one on the base I live on and it didn't look all that bad. The owner did lift it a couple inches and added off-road tires but other than that, it was so bad to look at.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:26 |

I disagree. It looks much better in person than I would have thought. Also, if you want good ground clearance for off-road - get the Trailhawk edition.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:26 |

I just don't feel it retains that JEEP look, branding language has been lost.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:27 |

Technicalities. I think most would still call it an SUV in reference to cars of similar size and nature.

Robble robble robble it's not a real Jeep unless it's an XJ, all water-cooled 911s after the 993 aren't real Porsches, every forced induction BMW sucks because it's not an NA I6 robble robble robble.

Thank you …. I'm not the only around here who remembers that.
People will always cry fowl when progress is made. I had a XJ and I got stuck a lot. I bet with the Trailhawk's LSD it will go further off road. Even if it doesn't flex as much.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:28 |

I'm starting to see them all over. If you're nostalgic for the original Cherokee, you're not going to like it. Otherwise, I think it looks fine.

what's up with that rear end.. MY GOODNESS. absolutely HORRENDOUS. Please hire me Jeep, because I can design something 10 times better than that.

Having spent a week with the limited and trailhawk models, I disagree, I think its much better in person that in pictures. I would like to see the crosstour do this
I was present to witness. They are actually quite decent off-road. The trailhawk was pretty impressive. It reminded me of a scaled down range rover.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:29 |

Yes, I do realize this. That is my point.

my neighbor in pasadena bought one, we joked about how ugly it is, but i went for a ride and we agreed it's a very nice car. he also joked that he'll be getting rid of it before any reliability issues can pop up. i was impressed with it ergonomically, but it's mechanically and emotionally deadmeat.
ok, i'm a dumb. he bought a grand cherokee, and thats what i was talking about.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:29 |

why the hell are there reflectors above the exhaust tips? they should have done what some companies have done, get rid of the tips, and just flush the reflectors/bumper to the bottom.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:29 |

someone has already lifted one? pictures needed. I was told by one of the engineers that lifting would be impractical.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:29 |

True, I guess the same could be said about anything with a Range Rover badge on it these days, right?

Had one … and a XJ too. Still got stuck a lot. I bet with the trailhawk's LSD it will go further off road.
Sincerely,

Exactly.
Speaking of the limited slip differential in the Trailhawk...I'd love to see Mopar offer it as an after sale part that can be put on a base Sport model. That would be awesome.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:37 |

Too many headlights and taillights!!! The rear end looks like they stacked a minivan on top of a sedan.

It look pretty damn good too. If I see him again (he works on the Army side of base, me on the Air Force side) I'll definitely get some pics and see if I can talk to him a little.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:47 |

Agreed. Jeep's (visually) have always been sort of boxy. Squared off. Look at the Wrangler, Commander, shit even the newer Liberty looks like a tiny Patriot now. But at the same time, The Cherokee has been evolving from the long box to the rounded out look it has now for some time.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 11:55 |

Ooo good thought. Mopar does offer some cool stuff so hopefully they'll do that.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 12:26 |

As far as off road chops are concerned, the XJ was essentially just a Wrangler with a different body and a bit longer wheel base. Same engine, transmition, T-case (with the option for full time 4wd), and slightly better axles. If you got stuck in your (I'm assuming stock) XJ, a stock Wrangler would do about the same.
Personally, mine didn't get stuck too often, and the wheelbase gave me an advantage over some obstacles, even without the front locker my buddy had (I only locked the rear).

WHAT?
The GC has great reviews for handling, quality, capability, and is beautiful.

![]() 02/06/2014 at 12:43 |

Ohh baby I know, even had the good t-case too. Its just that many times it turned into essentially 2 wheel drive when I had 2 tires with no traction. Did not love those open diffs.
Modifying is a totally different story, lifting solid axles is the easiest thing and the XJ will always win at that. I just think stock for stock the new one would go further.
Nice Jeep btw, and while I don't have any sweet XJ photos I'll provide a ZJ photo to prove I did take it off road.
Spring time was always the best time.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 12:45 |

With open diffs it's anyone's game, but if we're talking stock XJ to a Trailhawk, I think you'd be right.

In this picture, it looks BOSS. Have you seen the rear end though, it is tragic.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 14:00 |

The liftgate isn't a great bit of design, but its better than the front.

How did you get a picture of my car?
Seriously, it's old, tired, but it "trucks" on.
1998 JGC. In Green. With the gold and white pinstripes.
My rims are in much worse shape
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:07 |

I have seen a few around here, and a few of the Trailhawks.
I think they are better in person. They do grow on you just, as others have mentioned, as the Juke did.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:09 |

Haha awesome. My family used to own one in White with the gold accents, couldn't find the right picture for that.

I do like the Juke, and I did from day 1. I'll have to wait on the Jeep

Yes they have messed up as an owner of 6 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee Ltds
I can pretty much look at the styling of this..and say not going to buy it. I would buy a used 2001-2011 rather than buy this mode. The 4.0l inline 6 engines were so bullet proof..I loved them. 5.2 V8 and Quadra Trac was a bit thirsty so I settled on the Command Trac or Selec Trac as being my favorite 4 wheel system. I ordered a 2004 Grand Cherokee Ltd with Selec Trac and todate its been my favorite vehicle ever..the GPS system was a bit...iffy other than that...Great comfortable as long as you had good tires..you could get around all the oil rig roads I needed to get to and from work. Why mess with a good thing? The headlights are vile.
![]() 02/07/2014 at 02:17 |

Its an Edsel ugly design and I bet sales numbers reflect it. I hope they fire the design and management team who approved this. They messed up period.

you know., I nvr understood the non-turbo BMW thing.
arent they known for making great turbo motors? I mean i know that they do the best I6, but i though they were also known for turbos? (though to a lesser degree then porsche or saab)
![]() 02/07/2014 at 08:50 |
|
Not counting diesels, BMW had a few turbo motors back in the 70s and 80s but they weren't really "known" for it. But turbos have pretty much taken over their entire lineup in the past 5 or so years.

Actually, its selling very well
![]() 02/07/2014 at 16:37 |

Sure it is get some sales statistics and lets compare..I have owned a lot of Jeeps..and this one is not one that I would buy period
![]() 02/07/2014 at 16:47 |

more than 36,000 sold since it went on sale in October of 2013. That's pretty great. looks like a solid 10,000 units a month in the us, or 120,000 units a year. roughly 2x as many as Jaguar and Land rover sold combined in 2013. Doing pretty well. Sorry if you don't like it, I didn't either. I had a 91 XJ and loved it, but after driving one on and off road for a week, it won me over.

Whelp.if you pick and choose your month...its good but not great see the Dec figures
for any year..and oh 1999 was a high point with US sales at 300k...

Ugly you say?
I disagree.
![]() 02/14/2014 at 16:54 |

I'm sure the ground clearance statement was just to compare the Cherokee with your everyday crossover in terms of capability. But I'll just say it does have a bit more ground clearance then a Honda Accord Crossover (the Crosstour).
Crosstour: 6.2" Crosstour Specs
Cherokee (non-Trailhawk): 7.9" Cherokee Specs
Cherokee (Trailhawk): 8.8" Cherokee Specs
Not that this matters....but anyway, thought I'd point it out. Now back to your scheduled program.
![]() 02/14/2014 at 17:06 |

I expected a bit more from a Jeep.
![]() 02/14/2014 at 23:17 |

I'd also like to see a Crosstour do this. Bonus points if the Crosstour drowns in the water and we never see it again.
